GOP lawmakers rally against Pritzker tax plan

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- State and local Republicans gathered in Carbondale Tuesday afternoon to campaign for incumbent governor Bruce Rauner and attack challenger JB Pritzker.

"As families, we do what we have to do, which is live within our means," said Illinois Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti, who was among the group.

The lawmakers attacked the Democratic governor candidate's plan for a progressive income tax, where the higher the income, the higher the rates.

While Pritzker has claimed his tax plan won't raise taxes on anyone except the highest earners, he hasn't released any specifics.

But, the Republicans connected Pritzker to a plan by Democrat Robert Martwick, which would raise taxes for all those with an income of more than $17,000 per year.

"JB Pritzker's graduated income tax, progressive income tax, whatever you want to call it, would be crushing, crushing not only to the entire state, but in particular to this part of the district," said Rep. Terri Bryant.

While Pritzker has said he doesn't support Martwick's proposal, he's said he will look to the legislature to help set specifics.

"When we look to the legislature, only representative Martwick has given us guidance in that regard," Sanguinetti said.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Pritzker campaign said, "The state shouldn't balance the budget on the backs of working families and Bruce Rauner's party is lying about the fair tax to protect the status quo for him and his special interest friends."
