Preparations underway for 2018 Du Quoin State Fair

DU QUOIN, Ill. -- The Du Quoin State Fair starts next week and organizers plan to honor the event's and the state's history.

This year, the fair falls during the state's bicentennial celebration.

"They're finishing mowing the grass, getting everything nice and slick for the event. We have tents going up. We have the carnival going up," Tibretta Reiman, assistant manager of the Du Quoin State Fair said.

Part of the celebration includes a program, honoring the Du Quoin State Fair's history, as well as its founders, the Hayes family.

It's such a piece of history for southern Illinois, not just Du Quoin," Reiman said.

The fair will also have some new rides with an older feel, including the Skywheel, one of only three left in the world.

"It's just a very labor-intensive ride which is why most people choose not to use it, but it's a nostalgic ride," Freddie Miller, owner of Miller's Spectacular Shows, said. "And at a fair such as Du Quoin, it kind of sets the tone of what people expect to see here."

Miller is in charge of the rides.

The Du Quoin State Fair will have plenty of livestock events, car racing and music.

"We have a wide range of musical acts for the grandstand," Reiman said. "So we have anything from southern country rock to regular country music like the 90s to hard rock."

The fair kicks off with the Twilight Parade and a High School Marching Band contest Aug. 24. It continues through Sept. 3.
