Fox News honors passing of Aretha Franklin with image of Patti LaBelle

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Fox News has issued an apology for mistaking Patti LaBelle for Aretha Franklin, but not everyone is happy with the apology.

After the passing of the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, the cable news networks looked back at her life and career.

Unfortunately for Fox News, their graphic included an image of the wrong legendary singer. And people on twitter noticed immediately.

The graphic showed Aretha Franklin on the left, but in the upper right corner was an image of Patti LaBelle from her performance at the White House with President Barack Obama.

Jessica Santostefano, Vice President, Media Desk, for FOX News released the following statement as an apology.

We sincerely apologize to Aretha Franklin's family and friends. Our intention was to honor the icon using a secondary image of her performing with Patti LaBelle in the full screen graphic, but the image of Ms. Franklin was obscured in that process, which we deeply regret.

Although, it is unclear what was "obscured". As can be seen in the video below, the photo was from a solo performance with backup singers.

You can see the original AP photo here. Aretha Franklin is not in the photo, although she was part of the event.
