BENTON, Ill.-- The Franklin County Emergency Management Agency says a gas leak that began Wednesday afternoon has now been repaired.

The agency says Ameren crews fixed the leak at around 3:10 a.m. Thursday morning.

City officials say the boil water order is still in effect.

BENTON, Ill. -- The Franklin County Emergency Management Director has just released an update on the situation in Benton.

Ryan Buckingham says the City of Benton has experienced a major water and gas line break.

Crews from the Benton Water Department are working to secure and shut down a break on a 10" water main.  

A major gas leak was reported near the Benton Fire Department at Maple and Washington Streets. Benton Fire Department, Benton Street Department, Ameren and Franklin County Emergency Management Agency personnel are all on scene. 

Fire Department personnel have evacuated some residential and business structures within the immediate vicinity of the leak.

Gas has been detected in the Sanitary Sewer System so residents may detect a smell of gas throughout the area. If additional evacuations are required public notice will be made.

The public is reminded to stay clear of the work areas and adhere to the perimeters established by public safety officials.

BENTON, Ill. -- The City of Benton has issued a Boil Water Order from Public Square west to Du Quoin Street from West Church Street to McFall Street due to a water main break in the area. It is not clear if this is related to the natural gas leak.

BENTON, Ill. -- The Franklin County Emergency Management Agency and firefighters are on the scene of a large gas leak in Benton.

The call came out for a leak at the intersection of Washington and Maple near the town square. Authorities have closed Maple St., Election St. and Pine St. in that area.

Officials are evacuating buildings in the area. Firefighters have opened all manholes in the area.
