Judge grants request for new attorney in Varughese murder case

Posted: Updated:

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- A man convicted of murdering a SIU student has new lawyers, and those lawyers want to delay sentencing while they review the case of their new client.

A judge granted a second request for Gaege Bethune's attorney to withdraw from case.

Two new attorneys will now represent Bethune, one of which is Steven Greenberg, a man who once represented Chicago-area police officer Drew Peterson in the murder of his wife.

A judge denied the first request for a lawyer change last week and said sentencing would still happen Wednesday.

A conference call between the judge and attorneys from both sides is set for Monday to determine whether sentencing will be delayed.

In June, a jury convicted Bethune in the 2014 murder of Pravin Varughese.
