Local businesses hold #Kohenstrong fundraisers

ANNA, Ill. -- Community members are rallying together to support a family whose 11-year-old son is hospitalized in St. Louis following a serious accident near I-57.

On Wednesday afternoon, Gylian Moore was driving on Route 146 with her son, Kohen, and daughter, Keylee, when a semi failed to stop at the bottom of the I-57 on-ramp. The family's car became wedged under the semi-trailer. Gylian and Kohen were flown to the hospital while Keylee walked away without a scratch. The mother has been released from the hospital, but her son is in a medically-induced coma. He has swelling on the brain with skull and facial fractures.

Now, area businesses are holding fundraisers to help the family with hotel, food and fuel expenses. One of those businesses is the Hangry Hut in Anna, which is donating 20 percent of Thursday's sales.

Caroll Ledbetter, Kohen's grandmother, is thankful for the support. "We are so blessed to have a small community like this that comes together in times of need for people," she says.

Mike Quertermous, a long-time friend of the family, says the money can really help them because the family plans to stay in St. Louis at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital with their son, "They've got to be there beside him and they can’t come back to work, so they need all the help that you can give them."

In the meantime, the family asks for one thing. "We would sure appreciate just prayers, just prayers," Ledbetter says.

In addition to the Hangry Hut event, the Union County Soccer League, which Kohen played for, is putting together its own fundraiser. Details on that fundraiser are not yet available. But, Buffalo Wild Wings in Carbondale will donate 10 percent of its sales on August 13 to the Moore family. For updates on Kohen's condition, you can visit the #Kohenstrong Facebook Page
