JACKSON CO., Ill. -- A grand jury has indicted a Kansas man for the shooting of a Carbondale police officer.

Alex B. Karcher, 24, now faces one count of aggravated battery and six counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Jackson County State's Attorney Mike Carr says the charges stem from the July 31, 2016 shooting of officer Trey Harris.

The indictment says Karcher knowingly fired seven shots .233 caliber firearm towards a police car. Six of them missed, but one bullet went through the windshield and hit Harris in the eye.

Karcher previously faced drug charges in Jackson County and was set to go on trial next week.

Carr says that trial has been put on hold because of the new charges.

Karcher is being held in the Jackson County jail on $2.5 million bond.

He'll be back in court on Friday to face the new charges.
