Back-to-school spending expected to be 3rd highest

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- The back-to-school shopping season is in full swing and this year is expected to be one of the highest spending years on record.

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), total spending for K-12 and college is expected to reach nearly $83 billion this year which is slightly less than last year's spend which was $83.6 billion.

"This time around we're seeing spending is going to be very strong. It's actually going to be the third highest in the survey's history," says Katherine Cullen with the NRF.

According to this year's survey, families can expect to spend an average of $680 on back-to-school which breaks down as follows:

$236 on clothing
$187 for electronics
$138 on shoes
$122 for supplies like notebooks, pencils, and backpacks

And a surprise finding in the survey, this year teenagers and pre-teens are likely to spend some of their own money.

"What we hear from parents is that they're expecting their kids to not only contribute some of their own money to back to school, but also really going to be influencing what their parents buy," says Cullen.
