Behind the scenes prep for new school year

Posted: Updated:

HERRIN, Ill. -- Many schools across the region are getting ready for a new school year, which means lots of preparation.

There's everyone from teachers to secretaries to cooks and custodians getting ready for the new school year.

John Howerton works as a custodian at Herrin High School and is one of many people working behind the scenes.

"Myself and the other four guys here, we all pull together and help each other and then we have to scrub all the hallways and wax all the floors," Howerton said. "Get it all ready, make it look good and hopefully it stays looking good all year long."

But for Howerton, the work goes beyond that.

"Went to school here and like to try and make a difference and I like the kids, my son is a sophomore and my youngest will be here so I get to watch them go through school," Howerton said.

He and other school employees put in work throughout the summer in preparation for the new school year. School leaders expect about 775 students to walk through their doors and register for the upcoming school year.

Herrin High School Vice Principal Kris Mason called it a team effort, sharing his excitement for the new school year.

"It's not just one person, it's all of us together trying to do what's best and help students," Mason said. "All these different areas they build together, the teachers in the classrooms, the secretaries in the office, the nurse, the cooks, the custodians, we're all in this in developing relationships with kids so that way they have their best chance to succeed."
