Man tied to Carbondale officer shooting appears in court

Posted: Updated:

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- A man suspected of playing a role in the shooting of Carbondale officer Trey Harris will go on trial later this month in a drug conspiracy.

Alex Karcher is one of five men charged in the alleged conspiracy.

A jury found Christian Reichert guilty earlier this week and another man, William Cummins, has accepted a plea deal in return for probation.

Prosecutors believe the men moved several pounds of marijuana over two years.

Karcher doesn't face charges for Harris' shooting but prosecutors say that shooting is intertwined with this case.

Karcher's lawyer filed a motion to suppress statements made by a man who said he sold Reichert and Karcher the vehicle he allegedly drove the night Harris was shot.

The judge didn't rule on the motion. He said he'll make a ruling early next week.

Karcher and the other two men charged in the drug conspiracy, Brandon Jones and Jared Jones, are scheduled to go on trial Aug. 13.
