Man gets 50 years in prison for child sex assault

Posted: Updated:

UNION CO., Ill., -- A Mulkeytown man will spend decades in prison for sexually assaulting a child.

A judge sentenced Curtis Carr, 37, to 50 years in prison. Carr must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence and register as a sex offender for life.

In May 2018 a jury found Carr guilty of assaulting a 12-year-old victim back in July 2013. Prosecutors say it happened inside a car in Jonesboro.

Evidence presented at trial shows Carr sexually assaulted another girl in Maryland and engaged in online grooming of an Ohio girl.

"This sentence means the public will be safe from a serial child predator.  The convictions and sentence were only possible because the survivor of this horrible crime mustered the courage to come forward.  This case should also remind the public that child sex assault is often committed by a person who knows the child and has trust with the child or the child's family," said State's Attorney Tyler Edmonds.

Carr also faces child pornography charges in Franklin County. His next court date there is in September.
