SIRC hones in on literacy

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Southern Illinois teachers are working to make reading more enjoyable for their students.

Literacy and reading reluctance were among the topics discussed during the Southern Illinois Reading Council summer conference in Carbondale Thursday.

Council President Michelle Mohr said there's a balance between getting students to enjoy reading while increasing their literacy and levels of understanding.

"We don't need to read at our reading level all the time," Mohr said. Sometimes we gotta challenge ourselves and read a little higher and get better at it. But sometimes let's knock that level down too and just coast a little bit to deal with that," she said.

Teachers from 18 southern Illinois counties, teaching kids K-12, represent the local chapter of the statewide Illinois Reading Council organization.
