COBDEN -- Friday kicks off the 81st annual Cobden Peach Festival.

Friends, family, carnival rides and the crowning of the Peach Queen are just some of the "fruits" of the event.

Crews are setting up the carnival, preparing for two nights of summertime family fun.

"We have of course the peaches and cream and the food concessions," said event chairman Chris Hodges.

Hodges is also a member of the Cobden Lion's Club. He said money raised from the festival funds ear and eye exams for the needy in the community.

"It's a great organization. They have a great mentality of helping out the community," he said.

And there's no shortage of the featured fruit.

"We go through a lot of peaches, a lot of peaches," Hodges said with a smile. "Friday, we'll have a refrigerated truck back in and it's full of peaches. I don't even know how many peaches we go through. It's a semi-load, probably," he said.

The festival runs Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Hodges said he expects approximately 5,000 people total to show up Friday and Saturday.
