Dozens of firefighters battle two fires in West Frankfort

WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- More than 70 firefighters from seven different departments fought a raging house fire early Thursday morning.

The flames were so intense, the fire spread to the home next door.

Crews got the call to a home on the 900 block of South Jackson Street around 2:45 a.m.

Martha Mclaskey woke up to flames from her neighbors house.

"Rude awakening," Mclaskey said. "Strange sounds woke me out of a pretty good sleep and all of a sudden, I see out my window a red glow and found out my next door neighbors house was on fire."

Eventually the flames spread to her home.

"It's a sinking feeling to know that you're about to lose something that you worked all your life for then all of a sudden, I realized it could be worse," Mclaskey said.

Her neighbor's house sustained significantly more damage, but fire officials said the family that lives there was out of town.

Mclaskey was able to make it out of her house and now she's focusing on saving family heirlooms. She said she has plenty of help.

"This is gonna be fine. I've got friends. I've got family," Mclaskey said. "I've got family friends that are here. The support is wonderful and you find out what your blessings are in something like this."

And not only that, her cat Salsa also made it out safely.

"I couldn't find her coming out because I was told to get out, get out now," Mclaskey said. "And all of a sudden, here comes a fireman out, carrying her and so Salsa's doing good. Salsa's doing fine. She'll outlive us all."

No one was hurt, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating.

Investigators have not determined a cause.
