Real life superheroes lend a helping hand

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A group of local superheroes gathered at the Carbondale Public Library to encourage neighbors to volunteer more.

The Illinois Initiative hosted the event and showed episodes from "Rock & Bug's Superhero Nation."

In 2013, Treesong founded the Illinois Initiative, which is a local branch of the Initiative Collective working to help those in need. They collaborate with others, like Rock and Bug, who traveled across the country and stopped in Carbondale last summer. That's when they met and interviewed "local superheroes," otherwise known as people helping in their communities.

"Illinois Initiative, it's the branch of a larger group of real life super heroes, we go out in our communities and we adopt a superhero identity as a way of doing community service," Treesong said. "The environment is one of my big focuses as a superhero."

The Illinois Initiative encourages folks to get involved and volunteer with nonprofits like the Good Samaritan House, among many other organizations.

Good Samaritan Ministries Executive Director Patty Mullen said they are in need of volunteers year round and the support reaches many.

"Usually the volunteers are people who have used one of our programs and they come back because they were so happy to get back on their feet, they want to come back and help somebody else," Mullen said. "And it really does brighten their day immensely and it makes you feel like you've done something good for your community and that person in need."

Meantime, Treesong hopes to see more real life heroes emerge across Illinois.

"I also want people to know that regardless of whether they do it with a costume or not, whether they call it anything special, everyone can participate in their community, everyone can help in their way, anything great or small that you can do to help your neighbors is a good thing," Treesong said.
