Purple Martin Roost Rings Visible on Local Radar

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- A pretty cool sight Tuesday morning on Doppler radar as thousands of birds, likely purple martins, take flight from their overnight roosts right around sunrise. These birds gather by the thousands, and for a few weeks each summer, "roost rings" appear on Doppler radar as the birds take flight each morning to forage and find food. The rings start small, but then get larger and fade away as the birds spread out away from the roost area.
