Herrin family in need after apartment fire

Posted: Updated:

HERRIN, Ill. -- A Herrin family is in need after a fire ripped through their home and destroyed all their belongings.

The fire erupted at Woodlawn Apartment complex on Pierce Square on Tuesday around 4:30 p.m.

No one was hurt in the fire, but three children and a family lost all their belongings, including everything from toys and clothes to family photos.

"Once we get into a place, we'll have to try and start rebuilding everything that we had lost," Anna Akes said. "At this point in time, prayers and support, anything that anybody could help with would be greatly appreciated."

The family is in between staying in a motel and a relative's apartment, where a total of nine people are currently being housed. Some neighbors have already donated items for the children. Meantime, the family told News 3 firefighters continue to investigate the fire.

This message was posted on Facebook by Cheyenne Akes: Tonight, July 11,2018, my sisters and my 3 niece and nephews suffered a huge tragedy and devastating loss to their family. They had a house fire that resulted in a total loss. Everything they have worked so hard to accomplish was gone in an instant. They are left with questions, broken hearts, and not knowing where they will go. They are in need of any assistance that can be provided. Clothing, money, food, shelter, advice, and community support or services. If you are in a position to help in anyway I know they would appreciate it. Every little bit will help. They are left with the clothes on their backs. Thank you everyone for taking the time to read this and taking an interest in my family.
