PADUCAH, Ky -- A 21-year-old mother of three is in jail tonight, after police say she left her young children home alone while she went to the doctor's appointment.

Nausicaa Williams was arrested on charges of three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor for leaving her twin infants and 5-year-old daughter home alone.

Police received an anonymous tip, informing them that twin infants had been left alone inside an apartment in the 800 block of McGuire Avenue.

When the police officer arrived, he heard faint crying inside the apartment, but couldn't get anyone to come to the door. He checked the door and found it was unlocked.

The officer announced himself, but still no one replied, so he entered the apartment and found twin 10-month-old girls alone in a portable crib. The officer said the babies were wearing only diapers, which were urine-soaked and had not been changed in some time.

While speaking with neighbors to try to identify the infants' mother, the officer learned that an older child, 5 years of age, was missing. Officers were told that the child had left the apartment in her nightgown and got on a church bus.

The officer confirmed that the bus driver had taken the child to the nearby Salvation Army building, and that she was safe.

He eventually located the girls' mother, Nausicaa Williams, who said she had gone to a doctor's appointment, and had asked two people to look in on the children. She admitted they were alone when she left the apartment.

Williams was arrested on three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and booked into McCracken County Regional Jail. The three girls were released to relatives.
