Neighbors worry about living close to Franklin County Juvenile Center

Posted: Updated:

BENTON, Ill. -- Several neighbors near the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center are concerned about their safety, following the escape of three teens Wednesday afternoon.

This includes  Virginia Purdie, who says she never worried about the neighborhood before moving in, "No, never. I've always lived near my dad. "

Like many, Purdie says she found out about the recent juvenile escapees on social media. "I was going through Facebook and came across it."

She believes there should be a better system for alerting those who live nearby. "An alarm system would have been fine. They need to do something with that, so we can be notified this is going on." Purdie explains.

Meanwhile, neighbor Derick Younger says safety is a priority for his family. They keep their doors locked at all times but he's not worried about the escapees posing a danger, "If they’re out running away then they’re probably not going to be close to the juvenile [detention] center."

But Younger would like to know the identities of the escapees, which county law enforcement is not releasing because they are minors. "There are so many kids out running around in the summertime. Nobody ever looks suspicious, so if you could I.D. the people then it would be better."

Purdie would like to know what crimes the juveniles committed, especially if they were violent. "We have a right to know what they’ve done. If they’re running loose, we need to know."

Both parents say the situation is not enough to make them want to move from their neighborhood, but they do hope the escapees are caught quickly.

Here's a description of the juveniles given by authorities:

  • Suspect #1 - White Male, 17, 5'6" 115, brown hair/brown eyes. Last seen wearing navy blue pants, grey shirt.
  • Suspect #2 - White Male, 17, 5'9" 163, brown hair/blue eyes. Last seen wearing navy blue pants, grey shirt.
  • Suspect #3 - White Male, 17, 5'3" 103, brown hair/blue eyes. Last seen wearing navy blue pants, grey shirt. Has a scar near eye.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of these escapees please contact the Franklin County Sheriff's Office at 618-438-4841 or your law enforcement.
