Miners participate in All-Star game

Posted: Updated:

O'FALLON, MO -- A trio of Southern Illinois Miners players and the Miners' coaching staff took part in the Frontier League's All-Star game Wednesday at CarShield Field, home of the River City Rascals.

The league divided the all-stars up differently this year, making it the Rookies versus the Experienced team.  That put Miners' players on opposing teams as catcher Chance Shepard and reliever Kyle Tinius played on the Experienced team while outfielder Romeo Cortina played on the Rookie team.

Shepard and Cortina were both 0-2.  Tinius tossed a scoreless seventh inning, striking out one.

By virtue of the Miners being in first place on July 4th, Miners' manager Mike Pinto was one of the two managers for the game.  He guided the Experienced team to the 8-3 win.  Normal's Derrick Loveless earned game MVP honors, hitting two homers and driving in five on the night.

The Miners will return to action Friday night, as they will open the second half at Florence.
