Running is a family affair for the Bruce Family

MARION, Ill. --  The Bruces are one fast family.  Maddy Bruce runs at Illinois, John Bruce was part of Marion’s second-place state finish in the 4 by 800 meter relay this year, and Margaux Bruce went to state for Marion junior high cross country and will run for the high school team this fall.

“People think running is really hard and not fun, but you can really make it fun," Maddy said.  "I feel like that’s what my family has done and it’s an activity we can all do together.”

Maddy was the first in the family to get into running and the others followed suit.

“Well my brother and sister have always been great runners," explained Margaux.  "Once I saw them it inspired me to run like them.”

But growing up running together quickly turned competitive.

"It’s become more of a strategy of who can keep up with each other," said Maddy.  "Somedays we’ll be like, 'Oh lets start out slow, let’s take it easy today,' and then the last 100 will become a dead sprint.”

Maddy and John have each won their fair share of family races.

“She would always just destroy me," explained John.  "Once I got competitive with her, it was more fun, we could run together and now I can just blow the doors off her.”

While Margaux, who plays multiple sports, brings something a little different to the table.

“Yeah, I’m the most athletic,” she added.

There’s nothing wrong with healthy competition and for the Bruces its made them that much faster.

“Without them, I wouldn’t be as motivated," Margaux explained.  "I wouldn’t want to do all these things.”

“You all work together and you want to better each other and care about each other more than anything,” added Maddy.
