SIU alums to be recognized by MVC

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE, Ill. — SIU Hall of Fame Quarterback Joel Sambursky and his wife, Samantha, have been selected as recipients of the Missouri Valley Conference's (MVC) Most Courageous Award, according to Saluki Athletics. The couple will be recognized during SIU's football game versus SEMO on September 15.

The MVC presents the award to past or present student-athletes, coaches or university administrators who demonstrate unusual courage in the face of personal illness, adversity or tragedy and whose behavior reflects honor on the institution or the Conference.

The Sambursky's one-year-old son, Theodore (or Teddy), was born prematurely on April 13, 2017, with a heart arrhythmia. In May, Theodore developed an infection that went to his brain. He underwent multiple surgeries during his nearly four months in the St. Louis Children's Hospital. Teddy continues to face and overcome many complications from the infection.

Joel and Samantha's courage inspired a public-awareness campaign called "Tough Like Teddy" that drew hundreds of supporters and well-wishers to a 100-minute workout at SIU's track complex last July to recognize Teddy's 100th day in the hospital.

Joel is a Saluki Hall of Fame quarterback, playing from  2002-2005. He is a member of SIU's Board of Trustees. Samantha played for SIU's women's golf team from 2004-2007.
