Sears to close its last location in Chicago

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Sears and Chicago have been intertwined for more than a century. The city served as headquarters for the company, with the tallest building in the city known as the Sears Tower from 1973 until 2009 (when it was renamed the Willis Tower).

The retailer, Sears, Roebuck, & Co., opened it's headquarters in Chicago in 1887. It started as a mail-order catalog and opened its first retail location in Chicago in 1925. It moved its headquarters into the tallest building in the world at the time, in 1973.

At one point in time, Sears was the world's largest retailer. In recent years, however, the retailer has struggled, forcing it to close its last store remaining in the Windy City.
