Young tennis players improving their skills at the Pearce Juniors Tennis Camp

Posted: Updated:

MARION, Ill. -- Summer camp is supposed to be fun and that’s what Joe Pearce is preaching this week at the Pearce Juniors tennis camp.

“My goals for this week is that they have fun," Pearce explained, "Number two, they learn what sportsmanship is and number three, they get along with everybody and have a good time.”

It’s year five for the Pearce Juniors Tennis Camp and like the previous four, this year is about teaching life lessons and improving as an all-around athlete.

“All the sportsmanship aspects go from the tennis court into the real world," said Pearce, "That’s what we try to maintain in the kids is that they can take something from the court and take it home.”

These lessons are coming from an accomplished coach. Pearce is a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association with seven different coaching certifications.

“I try to keep my teaching abilities right in line with what’s going on today," Pearce said.  "I could’ve gotten my certificate eight years ago and left it that.  But I want to keep on giving and keep on learning as a teaching professional as I go.”

“Joe in my life has been a true inspiration through tennis and he’s really helped me out in all aspects of life,” added Nicole Szidik. Szidik is one of the assistant coaches this week and has taken tennis lessons from Pearce.

But for Pearce, there is one thing that keeps him coming back. “I love these kids," added Pearce.  "I want you to know that.”
