SIU Rec Center to offer free canoe rentals

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- SIU's Campus Lake has seen quite a few changes in the past couple of years. After being drained and restored, the lake is starting to look like it's old self again, welcoming recreation back on the water.

Starting Saturday, the SIU Student Rec Center will offer free canoe, kayak, and paddleboat rentals for students and Rec members, and $5 rentals for non-students or Rec members.

Organizers hope the return of the rentals will encourage people to be more active around campus.

"This is the first year in a couple years. A couple years ago we used to be out on the lake, but not recently we haven't been. So this is the first time in a couple years," said Amber Armstrong, assistant director of facilities at the Student Rec Center. "I think some people haven't been out on the water before, so this is a good experience for them to rent a canoe or kayak, and check it out. And just be outside and enjoy the weather."

Rentals are available every Saturday and Sunday from 4-7 p.m. all summer long.
