Local MMA fighter earns first professional win

Posted: Updated:

WSIL-- After going the distance and losing by decision in his professional debut back in November, Tavae Lewis knew he needed to come up with a finish the next time he stepped into the octagon.

In his return to the cage this weekend, the 'Southern Illinois Golden Boy' didn't leave it up to the judges.

Tavae Lewis, of Carbondale, had redemption on his mind in the moments leading up to his second professional fight.

"The first fight, I didn't train nearly as hard as i did for this one. For this one, I was thinking, okay, this is not going to a decision at all," said Lewis.

Standing in his way of his first professional win was Christopher Blevins out of Westlake, Ohio. Lewis' plan of attack was to come out of the gate fast, and try to catch his opponent off guard.

With just 54 seconds left in the first round of the bout, Lewis secured a rear-naked choke-hold, and Blevins was forced to tap-out.

"Soon as he gave me his back, I slid under him for that takedown, and I was like, 'Aw yea, it's over'," said the 26 year old fighter.

With a win now officially under his belt, Lewis turns his focus to begin training for his next fight.

"I thought I was hungry after that last loss. That isn't anything to what it is compared to now. Now it's like I'm starving for it," said Lewis. It's like whenever you have a little kid that doesn't ever each sugar, all they eat is vegetables. You give them a little bit of sugar, they're getting addicted, they want more. I'm starving for it, now I'm really really starving for it."

Lewis will have to wait as he serves a 30-day medical suspension for that cut above his eyebrow, and hopes to return to the octagon in August.
