Miners walk off with win over Gateway

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- The Southern Illinois Miners walked off with their third straight win Friday night, beating Gateway 6-5.

The Grizzlies grabbed a quick lead as Shane Mardirosian led off the game with a home run, but the Miners answered as Chance Shepard bashed a three-run shot in the bottom of the first for a 3-1 lead.

The Miners built a 5-2 lead, but Gateway scored single runs in the fifth and seventh to cut it to 5-4.  Then in the ninth, Mardirosian delivered a two-out RBI single to tie the game at five.

A throwing error allowed Ben Moore to reach second to lead off the bottom of the ninth for the Miners.  That set up Harrison Bragg to play the role of hero as he ripped one down the third base line.  Moore came around to score the game winner without a play.

The Miners improve to 21-18 and move within a half game of first place Evansville, who lost 5-3 at home to River City.  The Rascals are also a half game back.

The Miners and Grizzlies will continue their series with a 6:05 game Saturday at Rent One Park.
