IRS announces new streamlined 1040

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Next year, Americans will be able to file their individual tax returns on what the government is calling a "postcard-sized" form.

Instead of filling two pages for the 1040, the page is cut in half, double-sided and has 23 lines, down from 79.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the new look delivers on the promise to simplify the tax-filing process.

It will replace the old 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ.

The IRS says it will be finalizing the new version of the 1040 over the summer.
