Mt. Vernon native Tredaja Harris' hard work leads to track scholarship

Posted: Updated:

MT. VERNON, Ill. - Tredaja Harris has been a force on the high school track representing Mt. Vernon at state all four of her years.

"It’s just something I do that I’m good at," Harris said.  "Running at the high school was fun though, I really liked the competition and all of that.”

As a freshman, Harris missed advancing to the finals in the 200-meter dash by .03 seconds.

"That’s a step. Now you’ve got to take that and see how you react from that to say ‘what am I going to do next year,’” Mt. Vernon girls track and field coach, Connie Harre-Blair, explained of Harris's response after that race.

So then, Harris put in the work.  She made it to the finals in the 100 and 200 the next three years earning six medals and setting two school records in the process.

“That type of record that she could come back and come back and always make it the finals, her sophomore year, her junior year and then her senior year, that shows a lot,” added Harre-Blair.

The hard work wasn’t just on the track. Harris also worked at Popeyes, babysat, and maintained her grades during the season.

"[I was] overworked a little bit, but it's ok,” Harris said.

But it all paid off. Harris is heading to SIU this fall on a track scholarship.

"I’ve seen the times those girls were running, and I thought I don’t think I can run that fast, but I’ll try,” said Harris.

“It’s going to provide for her a chance to meet a lot of new interesting people, people that want to help," added Harre-Blair. "But also to be able to travel and see others and see that next step up. I think she’ll do well.”

College will be a new challenge, but there’s no doubt Harris will attack it with the grit and determination she’s shown the last four years.
