Local racing team dominating NHRA dragstrip

McLEANSBORO -- Three seconds is all it takes for a top fuel dragster to make it's way down the dragstrip, but the week leading up to the race can be a bit more time consuming for the crew.

"It's a 24/7 job. Every pass we make for every three seconds, basically you have to rebuild the whole engine. So everything comes out, gets put right back in with new stuff, and throughout the week, we check everything we swap out," said crew member Skylar Blades.

In only five years...the Stringer Performance team has climbed to the top of the NHRA standings, holding several records, as well as winning the Top Fuel championship last year.

Team owner Doug Stringer credits his team's success to the dedication his crew puts in week in and week out.

"We basically work out from behind my house, and it's all about the people we've managed to assemble to do that. It all comes down to basic fundamentals of surrounding yourself with the right people that have strong work ethic and a desire to win," said Stringer.

Skylar Blades, of Carmi, joined Stringer Performance when the team started 5 years ago. He's one of four crew members from the area. Blades says the desire to win goes beyond the garage.

"I've always wanted to drive, and in order to get there, you've got to find your own path, and this is my path. So you got to start at the bottom and work your way up," said Blades.

Blades and the Stringer Performance crew will hit the road Tuesday, they'll be headed to New Hampshire to compete next weekend.
