Du Quoin man to fight on UFC Contender Series

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- In the world of mixed martial arts, the UFC reigns king. Most professional fighters can only dream of making it to the UFC octagon, but one Du Quoin man will have a chance to make that dream a reality.

Garrett Gross' journey started from a lot of self-confidence.

Nearly a decade ago Gross ran into a friend from high school that had picked up fighting in mixed martial arts. Garrett figured if his friend could do it, so could he.

"Well, the next week, I went over and sparred at his house, and he was beating me, so that's how it started really. Three months after that, I had my first fight, and it kind of just went on from there," said the 29 year old Du Quoin man.

Over the next nine years, Gross worked his way into the professional circuit, and started turning some heads. After amassing a 14-6 record, with 12 of those wins by knockout, Gross got the call he'd been desperately waiting for.

"For the last two years, every time my phone rang, I was like, 'It's probably Dana White, probably Dana White. It's probably Dana White', and then it really was. And so, it's just something I've been praying for, and it's coming to fruition, and we're going to be ready, prepared, and go out and get a win," said Gross.

Gross was offered a spot on the Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender series in July, an opportunity to show that he's worthy of a UFC contract. And although this could be a big step for his career, Gross plans to stay business as usual when he steps into the octagon.

"I'm going to go out there and do the same thing, whether I'm fighting in front of Dana White or Jesse Finney at Shamrock, or wherever I'm at. I'm going top be as prepared as I can, and I'm going to come out and look for the finish," said Gross.

Gross will go after that finish in the octagon July 31st in Las Vegas, for his bout against Roosevelt Roberts.
