Toyota Marion sells car for $1

MARION, Ill. -- A local woman in need of a vehicle receives a car for just a dollar, marking the first giveaway through Marion Toyota's Project Car.

When coming to the dealership, Teresa Collins thought she was filling out some additional paperwork for the car giveaway application. Collins had no idea that she would be receiving a Camry instead.

"I was like my car, are you sure? It’s a dream!" Collins said. "When they handed me the keys, my hand was shaking... then I realized, well its really true."

Collins is a devoted grandmother helping take care of two of her eight grandchildren before her 5 a.m. shift at a rehab nursing center. However, she's often forced to walk the three-mile journey to work due to an unreliable truck.

This promoted a friend of Collins to nominate her for the giveaway, keeping the ordeal a secret. "She told me that she did this, and when she told me about it, I never in a million years thought ever that it would come to me," Collins said.

Collins is the first recipient of Marion Toyota’s new Project Car giveaway. President Jeff Mayer says the program will use traded-in or donated cars that need a little TLC like the Camry given to Collins, "It needed some body repair and some mechanical things to bring it up to spec, and to be safe. Then we did all those repairs."

Mayer adds those at the dealership chose Collins for her thoughtfulness, beating out more than 200 other applicants. " She doesn’t do anything but give her time to everyone else. She's just wanting to see her grand kids, but again thinking of other people, she wants to be at the nursing home everyday that so important to her."

Collins says now that she has a reliable car, she plans to visit some of her other grandchildren who live in Benton, "It’s a miracle that I can go and see my grand babies."

Those at the dealership say they want to continue the program, but are looking for more car donations. For more information click here
