Basketball camp shifts focus towards technique and footwork

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO -- Ron Fulenwider has ran a youth basketball camp for more than two decades. Coach Ron, as he's known, says although his camp is intended for basketball, he focuses more on technique and footwork.

"Even though it's called  basketball 101 camp, we do a lot of different drills to increase footwork, speed, and reaction," said Fulenwider.

In the 26th year of the Basketball 101 Camp, Coach Ron has called upon the help of former Olympian and Saluki Hall of Famer Cameron Wright. Wright says getting kids used to the right technique early will better develop them for whichever sport they play.

"Whether it's baseball, basketball, football, anything, what a ready position looks like, and how much quicker you are being in a ready position than when not," said Wright.

And even though it's only a four day camp, Coach Ron sees a vast improvement among all of his athletes.

"The improvement in their reaction, their quickness. For example, frisbees, a lot of them were having difficulty catching the frisbees. From day one to day three, it was amazing," said Fulenwider.

And it's seeing those small improvements in the athletes that keeps Coach Ron motivated to keep on coaching.
