Softballers prepare for Southern Illinois Select All-Star game

Posted: Updated:

MARION - It's the third year for the Southern Illinois Select all-star game as some of the area's best will play Tuesday night at Rent One Park.

"[We] Started this up to give the girls an opportunity to showcase what Southern Illinois has and the great softball that's played down here," said Cory Hastings who is one of the event's organizers.

The 36 players participating range from freshman through graduating seniors with more than 20 players committed to playing softball at the next level.

"It's the best of the best, it's all-stars," explained Morgan Dodd, a senior who just graduated from Marion high school and will be playing softball at Murray State next year.  "It's a nine-inning game, it's hardcore.  It's completely different too."

For the 19 seniors who will hit the diamond on Tuesday night, there is also an added bonus.  Pepsi Mid-America will give away a one-thousand dollar scholarship to one player.

"We will have all the seniors go into the outfield," Hastings explained.  "They will each get a softball and they will throw it towards home plate. Whoever is the closest will receive the scholarship.

But whether they win the scholarship or not, it will be an emotional night for those senior softballers who are representing their high schools one last time.

"It might be a little sad because after this, high school sports are totally over," said Murphysboro senior Kelsey Stanton.

"Just being able to represent Marion in my last year as a senior, it's fun, it's great and the competition and everything is good," Dodd added.

That competition will hit the field for a 7:00 first pitch on Tuesday night.
