Ned's Shed celebrates 65th birthday

Posted: Updated:

VIENNA — The ring of the bell on the door and the sizzle of cooking burgers; the sounds of Ned’s Shed were heard a little more often than usual Saturday.

Celebrating the diner’s 65th birthday, the owners decided it was the community that deserved a gift.

So for Ned’s Shed’s special day, they celebrated with 65 cent burgers, giving the hundreds of people that came by a price reminiscent of when the restaurant opened in 1953.

The community packed the restaurant from opening until closing, eating 1,200 burgers, about five times a normal day.

“They’re all excited,” said owner Angie Breeden said. “Just congratulating us.”

But the birthday wasn’t just a chance to sell burgers, it was an opportunity for owners old and new to look back on the diners history.

Rosemary O’Keefe owned Ned’s Shed with her husband during the 1970s and has seen the burger joint’s ups and down both firsthand and from afar.

She says over the years she was worried about the diner’s future

“You think, okay, it’s not going to make it,” she said. “But boy, Angie whipped it into shape.”

And Phil Gillespie whose father put the Ned in Ned’s Shed six and a half decades ago had just one thought seeing the community come out to support what’s become a local institution.

“How happy it would make my dad, to think that this was still here after 65 years,” he said.

Now with the birthday behind them the goal is still the same for the friendly faces at Ned’s Shed

Provide a good burger with a big smile to the community they love. The community that loves them back.
