Harrisburg Medical Center unveils new main entrance

Posted: Updated:

HARRISBURG, Ill. -- People going to the Harrisburg Medical Center will notice some big changes following the grand opening of its new main entrance.

Members of the hospital board, staff and local lawmakers gathered for the addition's ribbon cutting ceremony. The building will feature several new rooms including a reception and registration area, as well as, a cardiac rehabilitation center.

"In the past patients had to walk long distances when coming in for any rehab services," said Jeff Smith, Safety Manger. "Now we got them upfront and center."

Smith said the new main entrance will help separate outpatients from those in the E.R, who may be critically ill, and will provide additional privacy, "If they come in for labs or X-rays... you'll be behind a closed door."

In addition to helping patients, the new main entrance will also benefit staff working at the medical center. Board Member Dr. Larry Jones said, "We have much more room. We had outgrown our previous facilities, it's much more efficient."

Meanwhile, The Medical Center's President Donald Hutson said updates like these are essential, "There is a continued need to grow and expand to better serve the community, to provide better access to care."
