Gun range honors vets for Memorial Day with free concealed carry class

Posted: Updated:

BENTON -- The staff at Extreme Exigency Shooting Park honored this Memorial Day weekend by teaching a free concealed carry class for local veterans.

Instructor Chris Edwards said they host this event twice a year as a service to the veterans.

“They did their service for this country and this is our way to say thank you from us,” Edwards said.

In order to have a license in Illinois, it’s a mandatory 8 hours of training for military veterans or 16 hours for everyday citizens.

“Illinois gun laws are pretty stringent. We have the toughest curriculum in the United States,” Edwards said.

During the class, veterans learned the detailed rules and regulations, current laws, and processes for getting permits.

Brandon Smith served in the army for 15 years, and said he appreciates the service as well as getting to catch up with his fellow local vets.

“This is great,” said Smith. “To have them come out here and to give a class on a Saturday on a weekend and do it for free to give back to the veterans of the community, that’s just amazing.”

Edwards said this event serves as an example of how to truly honor Memorial Day.

“Memorial day has kinda turned into just a three day weekend. People get taken to theme parks and zoos,” Edwards said. “The veterans that I come across they don’t want to be thanked on memorial day. They want to remember the fallen, those who have been left behind. That’s what this holiday is all about.”
