MURPHYSBORO -- A group celebrated the 150th anniversary of the first catholic mass in Murphysboro Monday.

The first mass was held in a family's home then the first church was built in 1869, according to members from the church. Today, there are more than 400 families who attend St. Andrew Catholic Church.

Organizers call it a special place in the community.

"It's very important for the Catholic community, Murphysboro and probably the larger environment as well," said Bill Schwartz, Celebrations Committee Chair.

St. Andrew School Principal Jenny Martin added, "It is a family oriented community, it is the epitome of family."

After mass, St. Andrew School dedicated the addition of phase one of their building project, which includes additional classrooms, conference rooms, extra security measures and more.

School leaders there say they increased enrollment by 30 percent over the last four years and are continuing to grow.
