Safety tips for outdoor activity

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE--The warmer weather is getting more people outdoors ,but hiking with a beautiful view comes with some risks. Last week, one man fell to his death at Ferne Clyffe State Park. Tuesday, a hiker fell 40 feet at Jackson Falls -- a popular outdoor destination in Pope County. The man was airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville but no word on his condition.

Now wildlife officials say you need to start taking more safety measure before heading out the door.

Neil Vincent from Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge says before applying your bug spray and heading outdoors you need to make a plan.

He says it's important to know the rules and regulations of the areas you are visiting.

Vincent said,"Some of our rules might be different than what Shawnee National Forest..Some of the state parks know what you can and can not do."

Vincent adds using common sense can help save your life; by informing the people around you when and where you're leaving for a hike or a camping trip.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has these tips to keep safe: https://www.dnr.illinois.gov/recreation/Hiking/Pages/default.aspx
