Saline County mural raises awareness to prevent underage drinking

Posted: Updated:

HARRISBURG -- Harrisburg Middle School students combined creativity and community to raise awareness in Saline County.

They designed and painted a love-themed mural to educate community members about the dangers of underage drinking. The permanent outdoor mural was installed Tuesday afternoon in the Morello’s parking lot in downtown Harrisburg.

The project manager said the best way to get people to understand what’s going on is to get them engaged.

“We talked to the students about the issue and then they came up with all of this, all of these words, all of these images, all of the reasons why it’s important to stay away from underage drinking, those are all things they came up with," said Kate West, the Community Prevention Resources Project Manager.

This falls during National Prevention Week, which is an annual health observance dedicated to increasing public awareness of substance abuse and mental health issues.

The project is sponsored by Community Prevention Resources, Harrisburg Middle School, Morello's Restaurant, Barnes True Value Lumber and Cherry Street Printing.

Community Prevention Resources will continue raising awareness Wednesday with Eldorado students.
