Loved ones angry grass is tall in cemetery

BENTON -- Families of those buried at a cemetery in Benton, are frustrated after finding tall weeds around headstones and markers this Mothers Day.

As folks enter the Masonic-Odd Fellow Cemetery they were shocked to find trash scattered outside a large bin and overgrown grass around headstones.

"This is supposed to be a sacred place and to end up like this is awful," said Benton Mayor Fred Kondritz.

Even though the city of Benton has nothing to do with the upkeep of this cemetery,  Mayor Kondritz heard from angry loved ones upset these gravesites aren't better maintained.

"If this was in the Benton city limits, we would do differently than what's been done here," said Mayor Kondritz.

He shares everyone's frustration. His parents and his wife's parents are buried here. When they visited this weekend, he brought his push mower to make sure their graves were taken care of.

"By the time we pushed the push lawnmower from here to the gravesite, I was winded. It's like pushing it through snow," said Mayor Kondritz.

Thelma Norris was also disappointed with what she saw. Her husbands veteran marker was hardly visible in the tall grass.

"It's growing up over the edges of the veterans marker and the grass is pretty tall at the headstone," said Norris.

Both Norris and Kondritz say they've seen dozens of people out here taking matters into their own hands.

"An elderly lady was down with a pair of household scissors , cutting the grass on her husbands grave," said Kondritz.

Cemetery officials say this grass was mowed just seven days ago, but Kondritz says his hope is all this frustration sends a message to management that it needs to be mowed more often.

The cemetery manager says the company contracted to mow will be there Tuesday morning, on their scheduled day.
