Hundreds visit Bookworm for final day in business

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- The region's last locally-owned book store closed its doors Saturday, after nearly 20 years in business.

Bookworm opened in 2001. The owners, Carl and Kelly Rexroad, say with four young grandchildren and dreams of traveling, it's time to let it go. Hundreds of customers came through the store on its final day to get heavily discounted books and say goodbye.

The Rexroad's say they'll miss the store and all the great people they met running it. They believe they'll always have a strong connection to the community through their love of reading.

"My wife and I both love books and we've met a lot of people who share that love of books and that's going to be hard to let go of," said Rexroad.

The owners say they would love to keep the store open if someone is able to make an offer. They say the thought of a university town without a good used bookstore is disappointing.
