Herrin Cemetery Vandalized

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE 5/10/18 5:25p.m.: Herrin Police have identified the man who plowed into headstones at a cemetery as 37-year-old Darian Richardson.

An officer who had just finished escorting a funeral procession says he saw this black Nissan Altima driving 20 miles over the speed limit.

The officer tried to stop the speeding car, and that's when he says the driver sped up and turned into the cemetery. The officer says Richardson hit three headstones. The third headstone was large enough that once it was knocked over, the Altima became stuck, and that's when the officer took Richardson into custody.

Richardson faces charges of speeding, illegal transportation of alcohol, aggravated fleeing and eluding a peace officer, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, criminal damage to government-supported property, and three counts of criminal damage to property.
