Mom's warning of teen's "deodorant challenge" burns goes viral

Posted: Updated:

WSIL-TV - There was the Tide Pod challenge, the cinnamon challenge, and now at least one parent is raising awareness about "the deodorant challenge", which is making its way through the U.K.

The challenge itself simply involves spraying aerosol deodorant on your skin as long as possible. This one, like the others can cause some serious harm-- resulting in horrible chemical burns that can weep yellow pus for weeks.

A Facebook post from last week is going viral, drawing attention to the challenge. Graphic photos in the post show Jamie Prescott's teenage daughter with painful-looking burns on her arm. The caption says the wound is already 3 weeks old and may end up requiring a skin graft to heal properly.

Despite the recent Facebook post (which you can see below), the deodorant challenge is actually not a new craze. The Huffington Post reported on the trend back in 2014, citing teens in the U.S. uploading videos of the challenge to YouTube. There is also some question as to the scope of the challenge. The incident from the viral post took place in Yate, England.
