John A. Logan College to build new trail

Posted: Updated:

CARTERVILLE, Ill. -- You'll soon find a new trail to enjoy the scenery at John A. Logan College.

The college received $440,000 as part of Governor Rauner's recent $36 million investment into bike and pedestrian projects across the state.

The nearly mile-long path will connect to an existing trail in Crab Orchard Refuge Refuge and then extend over Route 13. It will then pass by the Harrison Bruce Historical Village and continue on toward the pond on campus.

School officials say it's not just student and staff who will benefit. "The community at large will be the greatest that's served," said Brad McCormick, Vice President of Business & College Facilities. "They will safely be able to get their children out on bicycles rides."

This multi-purpose trail is part of a larger project to eventually connect existing trails in Carbondale and Marion.

Construction is set to begin in 2020.
