SIU students create memorial for late classmate

CARBONDALE -- SIU students have created a memorial in the SIU Communications building for their recently killed classmate Aaron Banez.

Banez was struck and killed by a train in Carbondale on April 29th.

Those students donated items such as photos, letters, his belongings and items he gave to friends.

There is also a computer set up to showcase videos he filmed and directed while a student.

SIU Chair of Cinema and photography H.D. Motyl proposed the idea at a vigil for Banez to help students express their grief.

"I think part of the reason there was this outpouring is because when you heard people talking about him, he did so much for them," Motyl said. "He would give so much of his time so that they want to give back a little bit."

Motyl said the tribute will stay up through the end of the semester and part of it will likely remain through the summer.
