West Frankfort holds onto property donated to Morthland College

WEST FRANKFORT --  City leaders decided to keep four lots it previously donated to the Morthland College Foundation.

This comes after the college came under fire with the IRS amid financial concerns. Last February, the council voted to support the college by donating the land, but officials say no further steps were taken following that meeting.

Because of that, city leaders said no official action was needed at the city council meeting since they still own the land, calling it an unfortunate situation after trying to help.

"We gave them access to the lots to use but it seemed like there were some problems, we kind of stopped and took a second look," said West Frankfort Mayor Tom Jordan.

Jordan said other concerns include poor maintenance of the lots.

"It's a better situation because we still own the lots, the lots are ours and if they want to use them, we can make an arrangement with them if they wanted to do that," Jordan said.

While a handful of students are getting ready to graduate from Morthland College, city leaders and concerned citizens alike hope for better circumstances.

Calls and an email to the school for comment were not returned.
