Detours for Route 148 closure

Posted: Updated:

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. - Officials in Energy are preparing for Route 148 to be closed just north of Grand Avenue, this weekend, as crews work to replace a culvert.

Energy Police say the nearly 15,000 thousand people who drive through that stretch on a daily basis, should be thinking of alternative routes.

IDOT officials say, weather permitting Friday, they'll have to close a small section of the highway to replace a large culvert under the pavement. Both lanes will be closed, but a designated alternative route hasn't been mapped out.

Detective Sergeant Robert Terry with Energy Police says his advice is to avoid the area completely if possible. He says the most significant concern right now is large trucks on smaller roads to avoid the closure.

"The secondary roads are not hospitable to truck traffic. They can't make the turns. The bridges and roads weren't designed for the that kind of weight and that kind of use," said Det. Sgt. Terry.

Terry says they'll put out signs before the project begins to let drivers know which roads are closed to truck traffic. He says the Energy Police Department will be monitoring the situation and will adjust their patrols accordingly.

Weather permitting, the closure is expected to start Friday evening at 6 p.m. and end Tuesday morning at 6 a.m..

Energy Police's suggested detour routes are below.

Coming from the South:

Route 148 north to East Grand.
Turn west on East Grand to Hurricane Road.
Go north on Hurricane Road to College Street.
Take College Street east to Route 148.

OR

Route 13 to Skyline Drive.
Take Skyline Drive north to Crenshaw Road.
Take Crenshaw west to Route 148.

Right turns onto McCree Road will not be permitted. It will be closed to all traffic except for residents who live there.

Coming from the North:

Turn west on College Street to Hurricane Road.
Go south on Hurricane Road to East Grand Street.
Take East Grand east to Route 148 or take East Grand west to Division Street in Carterville.

OR

Turn east on College Street (which becomes Crenshaw Road) to Skyline Drive.
Take Skyline Drive south to Route 13.
