JOHNSON CO. -- A Pittsburg, Illinois man is dead after a fall at Ferne Clyffe.

Williamson County Coroner Mike “Junior” Burke confirms Charles D. Gill, 22, died after he fell on Sunday.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources tells News 3 Gill fell around 75 feet.

Gill then went to Heartland Regional Medical Center, in Marion, where Burke said he was pronounced dead around 6:30 p.m.

Officials said family members witnessed Gill's fall which is being investigated by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and The Williamson County Coroner’s Office.

It's a situation park visitors we spoke with called devastating.

"It's a tragic event and I'm sorry for their loss," one visitor said.

While officials are still investigating what happened, Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director of Communications Ed Cross stressed safety following the incident to help prevent other accidents.

"One thing that you can do to help ensure that your hike is as safe as possible is to make sure that you stay on those designated trails, that's one of the best things you can do to avoid any sort of injury," Cross said, adding the cause of the accident is still undetermined.

He also said it's important to wear suitable gear including proper shoes and long sleeve shirts when it's cooler. Other recommendations to stay safe on a hike include bringing bottled water to avoid dehydration and letting someone know when you're hiking in case something happens.
