Lt. Governor tours Continental Tire highlighting manufacturing

MT. VERNON -- More than 14 million tires are produced at Continental Tire in Mt. Vernon every year. Producing that many tires takes 3,300 people and most of those people live in southern Illinois.

Illinois Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti toured Continental Tire and said the up-to-date factory helps put graduating students right into the workforce.

"It's incredibly automated," Lt. Gov. Sanguinetti said, "These kids that are apprentices right now will be able to graduate and have wonderful paying jobs."

One of those apprentices is Jeremiah Frank. He began working as an apprentice at Continental while in high school.

"I took a lot of engineering classes in high school, so they ended up moving me into the college intern program," said Frank.

He said many of his learning opportunities come from the factory and gets to put those skills to work every day. It's young people like Jeremiah that Sanguinetti said need to take advantage of the manufacturing sector offered in Illinois.

Sanguinetti said, "A lot of our kids in school right now want to be job ready and have opportunities the minute we get out of high school."

It's the rising cost of education that has the Lt. Governor pushing for an emphasis on manufacturing.

"In manufacturing, you aren't saddled with all that debt that I was saddled with when I got out of law school. I want everyone to think about manufacturing as opportunities," she said.

Sanguinetti said manufacturing is the state's third largest industry.
